Scented Geraniums (Pelargoniums)

Boasting a delightful array of fragrances, these wonderfully scented plants  were first discovered growing in South Africa in the early 1600’s. It is the many varied textures and scented leaves that continue to charm gardeners. They all bloom, but the flowers on most are modest.  Scented Geraniums are very happy grown in a pot and tend to bloom more when their roots are contained.  Also very satisfied growing in the garden, where they can really spread out and create a nice display.  Victorians brought pot grown pelargoniums indoors for  winter and positioned them so that their long, full skirts would brush against the plants, thus scenting the room.  In summer they moved the pots outdoors and put them along paths for a similar effect.  The French distill the fragrance oil from some of the rose scented varieties for use in perfume, cosmetics and aromatherapy.  Save dried leaves for potpourri and use fresh in teas, cakes and jellies.  Our tips for wintering indoors: Give them a sunny window, let dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly.  Keep most winter  growth pinched off, as it is usually spindly, stretchy growth that is unnecessary, this will keep your plant healthy and in good form
